The expansive savannahs of northwestern Mikumi create the perfect backdrop for an impressive array of mammals, birds, and reptiles. In contrast, the dense forests and towering mountains to the southeast form a natural boundary to the extensive Selous area.

   HISTORY

Mikumi became an official National Park in 1964 and was named after the unique spindle-shaped Borassus palm trees. The expansive Mkata plain provides a habitat for large herds of plains game, including wildebeest, impala, zebra, and giraffe. These animals are often pursued by their natural predators. In the less fertile hills surrounding the plain, you are more likely to encounter Lichtenstein's hartebeest, greater kudu, roan antelope, and sable antelope. While it is never guaranteed, there have been numerous sightings of African 'wild dogs' hunting in packs across the plains.

   MAMMALS AND BIRDS

There is an abundance of wildlife in the area, including large groups of Nyasa Blue Wildebeest (which are not present in Ruaha National Park), buffalo, impala, zebra, and giraffe. Where there are large herds, numerous predators are always waiting for their next meal. There is even a population of Wild Hunting Dogs.
The park boasts over 400 bird species, making it a haven for bird enthusiasts. Alongside a diverse range of savannah species, there are also some notable birds such as the Zanzibar Red Bishop. Migratory birds add to the spectacle from November to April, extending into May.

   LANDSCAPES

Mikumi National Park shares a boundary with Selous Game Reserve to the south, creating a distinctive ecosystem. The national park is also surrounded by the Udzungwa Mountains and Uluguru Mountains. Within the park, there is Malundwe Mountain, which is part of a range of hills that stretch from east to west, connecting the Uluguru Mountains in the northeast to the Uvidunda and Udzungwa mountains in the west. Malundwe Mountain consists of three peaks along a ridge that runs from north to south. The highest point in the park is found on the southern peak of Malundwe Mountain, reaching an elevation of 1290 meters.
